HyperParathyroidism
Hyperparathyroidism results when you have a high level of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in your body
PTH is responsible for regulating calcium levels
There are 3 different types of hyperparathyroidism but the most common type is primary hyperparathyroidism.
Primary hyperparathyroidism is diagnosed by lab values including an elevated PTH and calcium
Many patients with primary hyperparathyroidism are asymptomatic but potential symptoms and side effects of the disease include:
Osteoporosis
Kidney stones
Mental fog/fatigue
Muscle pain/weakness
Stomach pain
There are two categories of
parathyroid disorders:
Hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism. The former results when you have an abnormally high level of production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and the latter is the opposite: an abnormally low production of PTH.
They affect the body differently.
